ONE FC: The Rise of the Kingdom

The first major international sporting event seen on Cambodian soil, the ONE Fighting Championship, the most important mixed martial arts competition in Asia, was held in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh on Friday, 12 September 2014.

Aptly named “Rise of the Kingdom,” the MMA competition signals a new dawn for Cambodia, which has been marred by internal strife for decades and has consequently struggled to compete in sports at the international level. Despite MMA being new in Cambodia, with most fighters used to the traditional Khmer boxing style Khun Khmer, eight Cambodian fighters out of a total of 18 participated over the course of 10 fights. The highlight of the night was the fight between Brazilian Adriano Moraes and Filipino Geje Eustaquio for the Flyweight World Championship title, which was won by Moraes.

Hosting the ONE Fighting Championship may help bring Cambodia to the international sports arena.
