Omar Havana, 1975 Madrid, Spain.

Spanish Freelance Photojournalist. Based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Previously based in Cambodia from 2008 to 2014 and Nepal from 2014 to 2015.

Omar has worked as a professional photojournalist since 2005, and since 2009, Omar's full time job has been photography and photojournalism, covering stories in Spain, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Libya, Egypt, Nepal, Greece, France and Cambodia, the latter being the country where most of his stories has been shot since he moved to the country in 2008. While in Cambodia, he alternated his work as a photojournalist with working in commercial photography, counting clients such as JP Morgan-Chase, Exxon Mobil, and the Raffles Hotel chain.

Since 2012, Omar has been represented by several international agencies, including the French agency Wostok Press, the Spanish agency Cordon Press/Corbis Spain, SIPA Press in France and EPA in Thailand and by Getty Images since 2013 to 2017 as a stringer photographer. His photos during the earthquake that hit Nepal in April 2015 have been published in thousands of publications around the world, including front pages in The New York Times and stories in TIME Magazine, National Geographic and Paris Match, among many others, and my work has been exhibited in the 2015 Visa Pour L’Image Festival and PhotoReporter Festival.

Omar's phorographs have been published in international media, including National Geographic, Paris Match, Al Jazeera, The New York Times, BBC, Financial Times, ABC News Australia, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, CNN and The Atlantic, amongst many other international media outlets. Omar has also collaborated on many stories with international organizations, including the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, Handicap International, Amnesty International, the Cambodian Acid Survivors Charity and The International Federation for Human Rights, as well as many others. In 2015, some of his photos during the Nepal Earthquake were chosen among the best of the year by international magazines and media, such as The Atlantic and The Denver Post.

But what Omar considers the most important part of his work is in reference to humanitarian photography, where he finds photography is much more than informing but a tool to help to improve the situations of human beings in need and helping projects to achieve their goal. Since the beginning of his career he has focused on working with humanitarian organisations across the world, from his most recent assignment for ActionAid Greece covering the refugee crisis across Greece, to many assignments in Nepal where he worked with organisations mostly on the aftermath of the earthquake that hit the country, but also, for instance, on the water crisis that Nepal is experiencing and on issues such as maternal health, child labour and migration. Omar has worked for both international and local humanitarian organisations, including Heifer International, International Medical Corps, the International Labour Organization, Handicap International, The Handa Foundation, UNICEF Regional Office South Asia, WaterAid Nepal, ActionAid Greece and the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC), between others.

Omar recently published his first photography book, “Endurance” a tribute to the people of Nepal after the earthquake that hit the country, published by FotoEvidence. He also recently collaborated on the book published by The World Health Organisation called “Nepal, a vision for resilience”.
